Rain Gardens

DESCRIPTION

Spongy soil is the secret to most Rainscaping practices, including the Rain Garden.  When deciding where your Rain Garden goes, place it so it will intercept and capture runoff water, at least 10 feet from foundations.

RULE OF THUMB for sizing rain gardens is to use 10% of the impervious area (ie. roof) to determine the size of the rain garden.   Rain garden are usually sized to temporarily pond runoff generated by a 1.25 inch rain.

Ponded water should infiltrate into the soil within 24 hours. Soils can be amended with sand and compost if topsoil quality is questionable. Plants with deep roots are encouraged to help maintain soil quality and good percolation rates.

Rain gardens rely on soils with adequate percolation rates. If water stays on top of the soil install an enhanced rain garden, one with a subdrain tile.
